The Department of Greek Education is excited to announce the launch of a new educational initiative, ”Strofades: An Unknown Treasure in the Middle of Nowhere.” This program, inspired by the acclaimed book  The Last Monk of Strofades by Katerina Lymberopoulou, awarded by the Academy of Athens in 2020, will be piloted with schools in the district. The program brings to life the fascinating history, culture, and natural beauty of the Strofades Islands, a remote and inaccessible part of Greece.

The Strofades, two tiny islands off the coast of Zakynthos in the Ionian Sea, are steeped in rich history. From ancient myths and shipwrecked Byzantine princesses to pirate raids, a self-sufficient monastic community, and a lighthouse built by the British, these islands embody a unique microcosm of human history and natural wonders. The program highlights the life of Father Gregory, the last monk of Strofades, who lived on the islands almost completely alone for 38 years, maintaining the monastery with devotion and care.

Throughout the program, students will explore the cultural and environmental significance of the Strofades Islands, which serve as a vital stop for migratory birds between Europe and Africa. The educational content is designed to engage students with stories of resilience, history, and the natural world, offering an enriching experience for learners of all ages.

Additionally, the program is inspired by an exhibition at the Benaki Museum in Athens (May-September 2020), which is available for a digital tour at the following link:  Digital Tour of Strofades Exhibition.
